The festival was initiated in 2016 when a beloved friend of Mila and the rest of the organisers passed away at the age of 24 after a traffic accident. In the midst of this tragedy it was decided that his name should be remembered and his love and devotion to theater - captured and cultivated. 

Since then the festival has been a stage not only for graduating theater performances of students across Europe and the world, but a place for sharing, learning, networking, laughing and working together. The aim of the event is to encourage togetherness, since one of its main characteristics is having the students gathered for all festival days. In this sense, the organisers like to think of it as a forum rather than a festival.

The Danail Chirpansky ISTF has brought together students from Bulgaria, Spain, UK, Ireland, Georgia, Russia, Poland, Macedonia, Israel, Italy, Slovenia, Greece as well as theater professionals from around the world as jury members, workshop leaders and guests.
